The rock making up the Cliffs of Moher began forming over 320 million years ago, during the Upper Carboniferous period, when the County Clare coastline was part of a vast river delta. Layers of sand, silt, and mud settled out of that ancient river system and compressed over millions of years into the alternating bands of sandstone and softer shale visible in the cliff face today, with the more recent Ice Age glaciers doing much of the carving that gives the cliffs their present shape.
