Galway was ruled for centuries by an oligarchy of fourteen merchant families - the "Tribes of Galway" - who took firm control of the city's trade and governance after the Anglo-Norman lord Richard de Burgh arrived in 1232 and triggered the city's first large-scale stone construction. The city grew wealthy as Ireland's principal port for trade with Spain and France, a connection still visible today in the Spanish Arch, built in 1584 as an extension of the older medieval wall.
O'Brien's Tower, included on this tour's cliff visit, was built in 1835 by the local landlord and MP Sir Cornelius O'Brien specifically to give Victorian-era tourists a formal viewing point above the cliffs - a reminder that visiting the Cliffs of Moher as a tourist attraction is itself nearly two centuries old.
