About This Tour

A private day tour combining the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren, the Wild Atlantic Way, a medieval castle, and Aillwee Caves. This private tour covers the Cliffs of Moher, the Burren's limestone landscape, the Wild Atlantic Way, a real medieval castle, and the Aillwee Caves - a genuinely distinct underground stop not found on most Cliffs of Moher itineraries.

Aillwee Caves, the genuinely distinct underground stop on this tour, were only discovered in 1944, when a local farmer named Jack McGann followed his dog into an opening in the hillside while out chasing a rabbit. McGann didn't explore far and kept the find quiet for almost thirty years, only mentioning it to cavers in 1973 - after which the cave system was properly explored, revealing bear remains now estimated to be more than 10,000 years old.

The caves sit within the Burren, County Clare's stretch of bare limestone karst, which adds a genuinely different underground landscape to a day that also covers the Cliffs of Moher, the Wild Atlantic Way, and a real medieval castle.

It's a route most Cliffs of Moher itineraries skip entirely, trading a bit of extra driving time for a landscape, and a discovery story, most visitors to the area never get to see.
