What makes Cinque Terre's coastline so distinctive isn't really the five villages themselves — it's the roughly 3,560 miles of hand-built dry-stone walls stacked into the hillsides behind them, created by farmers cultivating vines and olives on slopes too steep to work any other way. That terracing began as early as the 12th century and continued for generations, eventually producing one of Italy's most labor-intensive agricultural landscapes, long before anyone thought to visit for the views.
The day's second half shifts from coastline to engineering: the Leaning Tower of Pisa, whose famous tilt comes from shallow, roughly three-meter foundations sunk into soil that was softer on one side than the other back in the 1170s. A century-long construction pause, caused by wars with Genoa and Florence rather than the lean itself, accidentally let the ground settle before the tower was finally finished in 1372.
Covering both destinations in one day normally means stitching together regional trains on two different lines with no guaranteed connection; here it's simply one private vehicle for the whole route, with comfortable walking shoes doing most of the real work at each stop.
