Lunch on this itinerary is in Vernazza, arguably the most photographed of the five villages and also one with the oldest documented history — a 1080 reference to the "castrum Vernatio" describes it as a fortified naval base controlled by the Obertenghi dynasty, prized for a harbor sheltered and deep enough for galleys. By 1209, eighty-eight heads of household had sworn allegiance to the Republic of Genoa, which went on to build both a fortified landing and a shipyard here.
Reaching all five Cinque Terre villages in a single day, rather than the two or three most itineraries manage, means moving the way locals actually do — by the regional train that threads between the villages along the coast, and by boat along the water itself, both guided rather than self-navigated. The villages share the same hand-built terracing that earned the whole coastline its 1997 UNESCO World Heritage listing, but each kept its own character: Vernazza's mid-16th-century Belforte castle still guards the harbor it was built to protect from pirate raids.
A seaside lunch overlooking the water in Vernazza itself is a small but real difference from tours that only pass through for photos — it's the one stop on the day built around sitting still for a while rather than moving on to the next village.
