Sangiovese, the grape behind nearly every wine on this itinerary, carries a name some trace to the Latin sanguis Jovis, "blood of Jupiter," though its actual documented history is more modest: the earliest written reference dates only to 1590, in the writings of Giovanvettorio Soderini, and it didn't become one of Tuscany's dominant grapes until the 18th century. Recent DNA analysis suggests its real parentage lies in Ciliegiolo, an older Tuscan variety, and a grape called Calabrese Montenuovo — a less romantic origin story than the Jupiter legend, but a more reliable one.
Tasting nine different wines across three separate estates, two of them set in historic villas, is a genuinely deep itinerary by Chianti day-trip standards — most tours manage one or two wineries at most. Getting there off-road, along the region's "strade bianche" gravel back roads past cypresses and olive mills, also reaches cellars that a standard paved-road itinerary would simply drive past.
None of this requires any hiking of your own — the 4WD vehicle does the work on the rougher terrain, with a Tuscan lunch included to balance out nine wines' worth of tasting.
