Greve in Chianti grew up as exactly what its name suggests — a market town, established at the end of the 12th century along an important trade route, that became the commercial hub for the fortresses scattered across the surrounding hills. Its triangular main square, Piazza Matteotti, still carries that heritage: the stone arcades ringing it once sheltered market stalls, and a Saturday market still runs there today. At its center stands a statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the Florentine explorer who charted much of North America's eastern coast in 1524 and whose name also belongs to a New York suspension bridge.
A short climb above Greve sits Montefioralle, first documented in 1085 and still almost entirely enclosed by its original elliptical medieval walls — a fortified hilltop outpost built to hold a strategic position between Florence and Siena. One of its old entrance doors still bears the coat of arms of the Vespucci family, whose house here is traditionally linked to the navigator Amerigo Vespucci.
Finishing at a local winery to learn about Sangiovese, the grape behind virtually every Chianti in the valley below, ties the day's two half-day stops back to what's actually growing on the hillsides between them.
