Chianti's wine boundaries were first drawn on paper centuries before DOCG rules existed. In 1716, Cosimo III de' Medici, then Grand Duke of Tuscany, issued an edict legally delimiting the area allowed to use the name "Chianti" — the three villages of the historic Lega del Chianti plus Greve and a stretch of hillside north of it — making it one of the earliest officially recognized wine regions anywhere in the world. That boundary held for more than two centuries before the zone was expanded in 1932, folded into national DOC rules in 1966, and finally given its own DOCG ranking, separate from the wider Chianti area, in 1984.
Traveling that same historic territory in a private luxury minivan means the itinerary itself, unlike the boundary lines above, stays entirely flexible. Estates can be chosen in advance or left to your driver's own recommendations, and the route through vineyards, medieval villages, and the rolling hills the Medici edict once tried to formally define is set at your own pace rather than a fixed schedule.
Tuscan cuisine paired alongside the tastings is as much a part of the day as the wine itself — the region's food culture grew up alongside its vineyards, not as an afterthought to them.
