The idea of "Chianti Classico" as its own distinct wine, separate from the broader Chianti region, is newer than most visitors assume. The zone's modern boundaries trace back to a 1716 Medici decree, but it wasn't formally split off with its own DOCG designation, the highest tier in Italian wine classification, until 1984 — decades after the national Chianti zone had already been expanded in 1932 and standardized under DOC rules in 1966. The Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico, the body overseeing all of this, dates to 1924.
Three hand-picked vineyards, selected by a guide who knows the region well rather than chosen at random, give a real sense of how differently neighboring estates in this single appellation can approach the same Sangiovese-based rules — different elevations, exposures, and family traditions producing noticeably different wines from grapes grown only a few kilometers apart.
A multi-course Tuscan lunch, rather than a quick tasting-room pour, is built into the day as its own event — the kind of meal meant to be eaten slowly alongside the wines rather than rushed between vineyard stops.
