This tour's real strength is that there's no fixed script to follow — your group chooses from a genuine menu of Charleston-area sites, and your named local guide builds the route around whichever ones you pick. Downtown options cover the Battery and White Point Garden, the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, Marion Square, King Street, Rainbow Row, the Waterfront, and the French Quarter; across the harbor, the menu extends to Mount Pleasant's Old Village, the working shrimp docks at Shem Creek, and two very different historic plantation sites, Boone Hall and McLeod.
If your group chooses the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, you're visiting a real building with genuine Revolutionary War history. Built between 1767 and 1771 as a commercial exchange and customs house, its basement was converted by occupying British forces during the Revolution into a military prison known as the Provost — crowding American prisoners of war and other detainees into harsh, disease-ridden conditions. The building was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1973 and is now a museum.
Boone Hall and McLeod Historic Site, if selected, offer two genuinely different ways to encounter Charleston's plantation history. Boone Hall, established in 1681, is one of America's oldest working plantations, known for its long Avenue of Oaks (accounts differ on whether the Boone family planted it around 1743 or the Horlbeck family planted it later, around 1843) and for nine surviving brick slave cabins, built roughly between 1790 and 1800 by the enslaved people who also made the plantation's bricks by hand. McLeod takes a different approach entirely: established as a cotton plantation in 1851, it opened to the public in 2015 built specifically around the real stories of the nearly 100 enslaved people who lived and worked there and their descendants, rather than around the McLeod family's own history.
Because every stop on this tour is a real, specific option rather than a vague promise of flexibility, your group can go as deep into downtown Charleston's architecture, its Revolutionary War history, or its full plantation history — told honestly — as you want, in a single 3-hour private tour.
