Sailing has shaped Charleston's harbor since the earliest days of the colony. By the mid-1700s the city was already one of the busiest ports in British North America, and more than 300 vessels were built in local shipyards between 1740 and 1773 alone — most of them schooners and sloops, prized for the kind of fore-and-aft rigging that let them maneuver along the coast and up the rivers more easily than a square-rigged ship could. Sailing the Mystique out onto that same water, under wind power rather than an engine, is a genuinely different way to experience the harbor than a motorized cruise — quieter, slower, and closer to how this stretch of coast was actually navigated for most of its history.
A morning sail also tends to mean calmer water and softer light than the busier mid-day charter traffic in the harbor, and it's often a good window for dolphin activity — the same resident bottlenose dolphin population found throughout Charleston's estuaries is regularly spotted working the harbor's edges and sandbars in these early hours.
The Mystique herself is a real 43-foot sailing yacht, and your captain weaves genuine Charleston Harbor history into the sail as you go — a different format from a scripted land tour, since the stories are told against the actual water, forts, and shipping channel they describe.
