Middleton Place's gardens date to 1741, when Henry Middleton — a wealthy planter who had just inherited the property as part of his wife Mary's dowry — began laying out 45 acres of formal, terraced gardens along the Ashley River, inspired by French landscape design manuals of the period. They're widely regarded as the oldest surviving formal landscaped gardens in the United States, a distinction the Garden Club of America formally recognized in 1941 when it called Middleton Place not only the oldest American garden but one of the most important.
That landscape didn't build itself. By most accounts it took roughly 100 enslaved laborers close to a decade to carve the sweeping terraces, allées, and artificial lakes — including the now-famous Butterfly Lakes — out of the Ashley River floodplain, using skills in water management and earthwork that, as on the rice plantations nearby, often drew directly on agricultural knowledge enslaved West Africans brought with them. A certified local guide covering this history honestly, rather than skipping past it, is part of what this private tour includes.
Henry Middleton himself had a real, if complicated, role in the American Revolution: he served as President of the Continental Congress for a few days in 1774 and signed the Continental Association, but opposed an outright break from Britain and resigned from Congress in early 1776 rather than vote for independence. His son Arthur Middleton took his father's seat that same year and went on to sign the Declaration of Independence — a real split within one Middleton Place family at the exact moment the country was deciding its course.
The gardens themselves are also known for one of the oldest documented camellia collections in America, introduced around 1786 by French royal botanist André Michaux, decades before camellias became a fixture of Southern gardens generally. With a full 3-4 hours and a guide dedicated entirely to this one site — rather than splitting the day across three plantations — there's real room to take in both that horticultural history and the honest, harder history behind it.
