Charleston's harbor and surrounding estuaries are home to an estimated 350 or so resident bottlenose dolphins, and this stretch of the South Carolina and Georgia coast is one of only a handful of places in the world where they strand feed — a remarkable, learned hunting technique in which dolphins work together to drive a school of fish onto a muddy bank, then intentionally beach themselves for a few seconds to snatch the stranded fish before sliding back into the water. Researchers have documented it happening here on a near-daily basis, passed down from mother dolphins to their calves rather than a behavior dolphins everywhere know how to do. A private 2-hour charter can't promise you'll catch strand feeding in action on any given afternoon — it depends on tide and timing — but the same resident population that makes it possible is exactly why real dolphin sightings are so consistently reported on this route.
The charter's route around Charleston Harbor also brings you within view of Fort Sumter, the brick sea fort where the Civil War itself began. At 4:30 a.m. on April 12, 1861, Confederate shore batteries ringing the harbor opened fire on the small U.S. Army garrison stationed there, and after roughly 34 hours of bombardment, Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort without a single combat death on either side. Seeing it from the water, much the way ships' crews and harbor residents actually watched the bombardment unfold that morning, gives a different sense of scale than viewing it from land.
Unlike a scheduled group cruise, this is a private luxury yacht charter capped at 6 guests, so the pace and focus can flex around what your group actually wants — more time circling for dolphins, a longer look toward the fort, or simply cruising the harbor with your own drinks aboard.
