This tour covers the same real history as Voyzo's walking version, with the advantage of a private vehicle to cover more ground in comfort. Jewish settlers first arrived in Charleston as early as 1695, and by the early 1800s the city's Jewish community — roughly 500 people in 1800, growing to about 800 by 1820 — had become the largest, wealthiest, and most culturally prominent in the entire United States, a distinction no other American city held at the time. Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim, the congregation at the center of that community, was founded in 1749 and is counted among the four oldest Jewish congregations still in continuous existence in the country.
That community produced one of the real turning points in American Jewish religious life. In 1824, a group of young, mostly American-born congregants at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim petitioned for a shorter service, an English-language sermon, and other reforms; when the congregation's leaders declined, they formed the Reformed Society of Israelites — the first organized Reform Judaism movement in the United States, and the direct forerunner of what is today, by a wide margin, the country's largest Jewish religious denomination, now claimed by roughly a third of American Jews.
A driving format gives this tour room to take in the full geographic reach of that story, not just the handful of blocks a two-hour walk can cover — the congregation's 1840 Greek Revival building (built after fire destroyed its 1794 predecessor in 1838, and widely described as the oldest synagogue building in continuous use in the country), a genuine historic Jewish cemetery, and merchant-history sites spread further across the city, all with a dedicated local historian narrating from inside a private vehicle rather than on foot.
