The Morris Island Lighthouse you'll see from the water has a genuinely dramatic survival story behind it. Completed in 1876 for just under $150,000, the 161-foot brick tower originally stood about 1,200 feet inland from the shoreline. Jetties built in 1889 to protect Charleston's shipping channel ended up redirecting the natural flow of sand along this stretch of coast, and the erosion that followed has been relentless ever since — a cyclone partially damaged the lighthouse in 1885, an earthquake knocked its lens out of position and cracked the tower in 1886, and by 1938 the encroaching water had forced the light to be automated. It was decommissioned entirely in 1962. Today the lighthouse stands stranded several hundred feet offshore in open water, a landmark slowly being lost to the sea it was built to guide ships away from, and it's now preserved under a long-term agreement with the nonprofit Save the Light, Inc.
The tour departs from Folly Beach, a barrier island locals have long called 'the Edge of America' — a nickname that, depending on who you ask, nods either to the island's literal position at the southern tip of the Charleston peninsula or to its history as a scrappy, nonconformist beach town (it was once a marooning ground for passengers quarantined with cholera before even reaching the city). That same laid-back, slightly offbeat character carries over onto the water.
Your guide for the trip is a real 8th-generation Charlestonian captain, so the dolphin sightings, the shelling stop on Morris Island, and the lighthouse views come with the kind of local knowledge that only comes from a family that's worked these waters for generations, rather than a scripted tour narration.
