The boat underneath the party is a real trajinera — a traditional, flat-bottomed wooden vessel built specifically for Xochimilco's shallow canals and propelled by a rower working a single oar from the back. The name itself comes from the Spanish verb trajinar, 'to haul goods from one place to another,' which is exactly what these boats were originally used for: moving flowers and produce grown on the surrounding chinampas to market, long before tourism ever entered the picture.
Trajineras have always been loud, colorful, and social by design — their canopies are traditionally hand-painted with vivid colors meant to echo the flowers once carried along these same canals, and most are named after women. What's changed over the 20th and 21st centuries is the use: trajineras now run almost entirely as rented boats for exactly this kind of floating celebration, which is a real, documented shift in how Xochimilco's waterways are actually used today.
Layering a drag show, tequila, and music onto a traditional trajinera isn't rewriting the boat's history so much as continuing its more recent one — these vessels have been Xochimilco's go-to platform for exactly this kind of gathering for decades. The drag format itself is the genuinely novel part.
