No. The cave is a real natural formation shaped by volcanic activity from the nearby Cerro Gordo and Patlachique volcanic complex. During Teotihuacán's own era it's believed to have been used for grain storage, and it later hosted private banquets in the early 1900s before opening to the public as a restaurant in 1926.

About This Tour

Real stops include the genuine Teotihuacán pyramids and lunch at La Gruta — a real restaurant that's operated inside a natural cave near the ruins since 1926, run by the same family for generations.

La Gruta's dining room is a genuine natural cave, carved out by volcanic activity from the nearby Cerro Gordo and Patlachique volcanic complex, not a themed re-creation. During Teotihuacán's own heyday, roughly 100 BCE to 650 CE, the cavity is believed to have been used by the city's residents to store maize and other grains, which makes today's long lunch inside it a strange kind of continuity with the ruins just outside.

Its documented modern history starts in the early 1900s: the cave hosted private banquets for President Porfirio Díaz during the early-20th-century archaeological rescue of Teotihuacán, and it opened to the public as a restaurant in 1926, serving Mexican dishes rooted in pre-Hispanic central Mexican cooking. It's been run as a family restaurant at the site for generations since, and the kitchen's cave setting remains one of the few genuinely unusual lunch stops anywhere near a major archaeological zone.
