About This Tour
A private tour for your group only — the genuine Teotihuacán pyramids and the real 16th-century Acolman Monastery, genuinely credited as the birthplace of Mexican piñatas. This is a private tour for your group only. Real stops include the genuine Teotihuacán pyramids and the Acolman Monastery — a real 16th-century Augustinian monastery, genuinely credited as the birthplace of the Mexican piñata tradition.
The Augustinian monastery at Acolman was built mostly between 1539 and 1580, and its facade, carved in the ornate Plateresque style imported from Spain, is paired with murals that are genuinely among the earliest painted anywhere in the Americas. It's a real, well-documented piece of 16th-century colonial architecture, standing just a few kilometers from a city — Teotihuacán — that was already more than 1,500 years old by the time the friars broke ground.
The piñata connection is a real, specific historical claim, not folklore dressed up for tourists: in 1586, a missionary at Acolman named Friar Diego de Soria is credited with starting the Las Posadas tradition, adapting European piñatas and the pre-Hispanic practice of breaking decorated clay pots into pre-Christmas celebrations still held across Mexico today. The traditional seven-pointed piñata design is said to represent the seven deadly sins, with the candy inside standing in for temptation.
