Despite decades of excavation, nobody can say with certainty who actually built Teotihuacán. The city's first large-scale construction dates to roughly 100 BC, and archaeologists have proposed that its original residents may have included Nahua, Otomí, or Totonac groups — the evidence simply doesn't settle the question. What is certain is that the builders were not the Aztecs. By the time the Aztecs encountered these ruins in the 1300s, Teotihuacán had already stood empty for roughly six centuries, and it was the Aztecs — arriving centuries later — who gave it the Nahuatl name it still carries today, often translated as "the place where the gods were born" or "City of the Gods."
At its height, somewhere around 400-500 CE, Teotihuacán was home to an estimated 100,000 to 200,000 people, making it one of the largest cities on Earth at the time and the dominant metropolis of ancient Mesoamerica — centuries before the Aztec Empire itself ever existed.
