About This Tour
A private hike for your group only on the real Nevado de Toluca volcano, home to a genuine high-altitude crater lake. This is a private hike for your group only, on the real Nevado de Toluca volcano — home to a genuine high-altitude crater lake, one of the highest lakes in North America.
Nevado de Toluca, also known by its indigenous name Xinantécatl, is a real dormant volcano reaching about 4,680 meters (15,350 feet), with a wide summit caldera roughly 1.5 kilometers across that lies open to the east rather than forming a closed bowl.
Inside that caldera sit two genuine crater lakes: Lago del Sol (Sun Lake), the larger of the pair at about 400 by 200 meters and up to 12 meters deep, and Lago de la Luna (Moon Lake), smaller but deeper, with a real, strikingly dark-blue color against the black volcanic rock around it. Both sit above 13,800 feet, among the highest lakes anywhere in North America.
Reaching the crater floor is a genuine high-altitude hike rather than a drive-up viewpoint — the thinner air at this elevation is real and worth preparing for, which is part of why this trip is built as an active day out rather than a standard sightseeing stop.
