'La Combi' rides on a real piece of Mexican automotive history. Volkswagen de México built its Puebla plant starting in January 1965, and Mexican production of the Combi specifically ran from October 1970 until 1994. Unlike its countercultural image abroad, in Mexico the Combi earned its popularity for practical reasons — sturdiness, seating capacity, and ground clearance well suited to the city's growing pesero (shared minibus) transit system through the 1980s — and it holds genuine cult status here today, decades after Mexican production actually ended, with owners still customizing and repainting them in bright colors.
Mezcal is a genuinely distinct drink from both tequila and pulque, and conflating the three is a common mistake worth correcting. The word itself comes from the Nahuatl mexcalli, meaning 'cooked agave,' and while pulque — the pre-Hispanic fermented (not distilled) agave drink — predates it, mezcal emerged once Spanish colonizers introduced distillation in the 16th century, merging it with existing agave-roasting traditions. Oaxaca became its recognized heartland thanks to a distinctive underground pit-roasting method, which is exactly what gives real mezcal its signature smoky character — a flavor tequila, made only from blue agave in a different region, simply doesn't have.
Lucha libre's own real roots trace to promoter Salvador Lutteroth, who founded the Empresa Mexicana de Lucha Libre in 1933 — the organization now known as CMLL — making him widely credited as the father of Mexican professional wrestling. The sport's mask tradition began that same year with luchador El Ciclón McKey. Experiencing all three — a vintage Combi, a real mezcal tasting, and genuine lucha libre culture — in one private night gives a visitor three independently verifiable threads of mid-20th-century Mexican identity in one route, rather than a generic 'nightlife tour' built around no specific history at all.
