About This Tour
A private hike for your group only, reaching a real 14,800-foot altitude on Iztaccíhuatl, one of Mexico's most prominent volcanoes. This is a private hike for your group only, reaching a real 14,800-foot altitude on Iztaccíhuatl — one of Mexico's most prominent and recognizable volcanoes.
Iztaccíhuatl is commonly listed at about 17,343 feet (5,286 meters), though more recent satellite survey data puts the true summit closer to 17,160 feet (5,230 meters) — either figure makes it one of Mexico's genuine high-altitude giants. Its distinctive silhouette is real: four separate peaks along the ridge are popularly named for a reclining body — La Cabeza (the Head), El Pecho (the Breast, the highest point), La Barriga (the Belly), and Los Pies (the Feet).
The mountain's name, and the legend behind it, are genuinely old Aztec storytelling, not documented history: a princess named Iztaccíhuatl is said to have died of grief after wrongly hearing that her warrior lover, Popocatépetl, had been killed in battle. When he returned alive and found her dead, the gods are said to have transformed them both into volcanoes — hence Iztaccíhuatl's nickname, La Mujer Dormida, the Sleeping Woman, paired forever with the real, still-active Popocatépetl nearby.
The standard route up starts from a trailhead near 13,000 feet and climbs toward a mountain hut above 15,500 feet — real, substantial elevation gain on volcanic terrain, which is exactly why this is built as a serious, active hiking day rather than a casual walk.
