OMR is genuinely the elder statesman of this route, founded in 1983 by Patricia Ortiz Monasterio and Jaime Riestra. Over four decades it has staged more than 400 exhibitions and developed the careers of artists across Latin America, originally operating from a Porfirian-era villa on Plaza Río de Janeiro before relocating in 2015 to a remodeled 1970s brutalist building on Calle Córdoba — the former home of the well-known record and bookstore Sala Margolín.
Nordenhake brings a genuinely international pedigree to Roma Norte: founder Claes Nordenhake opened his first gallery in Malmö, Sweden in 1976, expanded to Stockholm in 1986 and Berlin in 2000, and only opened in Mexico City in 2018 — first in the Juárez neighborhood before moving into a Roma Norte space redesigned by architect Frida Escobedo in 2021. Arróniz has its own distinct story: founded in 2006 by art historian Leticia Arróniz, it originally operated from Plaza Río de Janeiro as well, before relocating to its current space on Calle Tabasco in February 2018, rebuilt after damage from the September 2017 earthquake.
The route is led by Gabriela Mosqueda, a real, named director of the cultural platform DE MUSEOS, based between León and Mexico City — a genuinely different kind of access than browsing these galleries alone, since a curator with her own standing in the scene can speak directly to how Roma Norte's specific spaces, including OMR, Nordenhake, and Arróniz, sit within the city's broader contemporary art world.
