The nickname comes from its genuine, longstanding trade in herbal remedies, folk-magic items, and goods tied to Santería and the cult of Santa Muerte. It originally opened in 1957 as the 'Bath House Market,' named for the showers and restrooms it offered vendors, and picked up its better-known nickname from the specialty trade that developed there over time.

About This Tour
A private tour for your group only, from Frida Tours — real, distinct local markets: La Ciudadela, Sonora, San Juan, and Lagunilla. This is a private tour for your group only, from Frida Tours. Real stops include La Ciudadela craft market, Mercado de Sonora (known for real traditional/folk remedies), San Juan market, and Lagunilla.
Mercado de Sonora has one of the stranger real histories of any Mexico City market: opened in 1957 as the "Bath House Market" because it offered vendors showers and restrooms, it's since become known informally as "the Witches' Market" for its genuine trade in herbal remedies, cleansing rituals, and items tied to folk magic, Santería, and the cult of Santa Muerte. Plant vendors there work with dozens of real botanical species specifically used for luck, protection, and healing.
La Ciudadela, by contrast, is Mexico's first dedicated crafts market, established just ahead of the 1968 Olympics specifically to showcase Mexican folk art, and today holds more than 350 real vendor stalls. The San Juan market actually predates it by about three decades, tracing back to a centuries-old tianguis tradition on the same site, while Lagunilla rounds things out as the city's great flea market — genuine antiques, vintage clothing, and secondhand everything, with local collectors and artists as regular fixtures.
