Ciudad Universitaria carries its own, separate UNESCO World Heritage listing — inscribed in 2007, specifically for its central campus, which UNESCO recognized as a major 20th-century example of Latin American modernism. That's a genuinely different designation from Xochimilco's own 1987 World Heritage status, and it's worth knowing the two sites are honored for entirely different reasons.
The murals you'll actually see here are real and specific. The UNAM Central Library is wrapped floor to roof in a massive mosaic mural by Juan O'Gorman tracing pre-Hispanic culture, the colonial period, and contemporary Mexico; directly across the plaza, the Rectory building carries a separate, equally real mosaic by David Alfaro Siqueiros; and on the walls of the Olympic Stadium, Diego Rivera built a relief mural out of natural stone sourced from the surrounding area specifically so it would read as an ancient structure that had been uncovered, not a modern addition. More than 60 architects, engineers, and artists worked together on the original campus between 1949 and 1952 to pull this all off.
Pairing that real architectural and artistic depth with Coyoacán's colonial streets and Xochimilco's canals in a single day gives you a genuinely different cross-section of the city than the standard Coyoacán-plus-Xochimilco pairing most tours stick to.
