Chapultepec Castle's construction actually began in 1785, ordered by the Spanish viceroy Bernardo de Gálvez as a summer residence, though the building that stands today owes most of its grandeur to a much later chapter. When Maximilian I of Habsburg and his wife Charlotte of Belgium took it over as their imperial residence between 1864 and 1867, they brought in a team of European and Mexican architects to rebuild it into something fit for a European-style court — which is the real, specific reason Chapultepec is still described as the only royal castle in all of the Americas to have genuinely housed a sitting sovereign.
The views from the terraces aren't incidental to the history, either — this hill has been a strategically commanding lookout over the Valley of Mexico since long before Maximilian's time, which is exactly why a succession of rulers kept choosing to build here.
Skip-the-line access matters more than it might sound: Chapultepec Castle is consistently one of the most-visited single sites in the park, and a private guide who already knows the layout means you spend your time with the real history rather than in a ticket queue.
