Chapultepec Castle's story doesn't end with Maximilian I's 1864-1867 imperial residence — after his execution, the building went on to serve as the official residence of Mexico's presidents starting in 1882, a role it held for nearly six decades. It was only in 1939, under President Lázaro Cárdenas, that the castle was formally declared Mexico's National History Museum instead, and it's been open to the public in that form ever since.
That long run as a working seat of power, not just a royal curiosity, is part of why Chapultepec still holds its real, specific distinction as the only royal castle anywhere in the Americas to have actually housed a reigning sovereign. The building has effectively lived three separate real lives — viceregal summer home, imperial court, presidential residence — before becoming the museum you'll walk through.
A private, no-strangers format means your guide can actually slow down on whichever of those three eras your group finds most interesting, instead of rushing a mixed group through a single fixed script.
