According to Catholic tradition, presented here as tradition rather than independently verified history, the Virgin of Guadalupe appeared to Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin four times on the hill of Tepeyac between December 9 and 12, 1531, asking that a church be built there in her honor. The account holds that when Juan Diego opened his cloak before the local archbishop, an image of the Virgin had appeared on the coarse cactus-fiber fabric — a tilma that devotees say should have deteriorated centuries ago and, by tradition, hasn't.
The architectural history is more straightforward and well documented: the Old Basilica, designed by architect Pedro de Arrieta, was built between 1695 and 1709 and formally designated a basilica in 1904. It still stands on the site today, now used as an Expiatory Temple rather than the main church, largely because its own foundations began sinking into the soft lakebed soil beneath Mexico City — exactly why a new structure eventually had to be built beside it.
