The National Museum of Anthropology opened in 1964 inside a building architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez designed specifically to let the collection breathe — galleries wrap a huge central courtyard built around a reflecting pool and a single, massive concrete canopy roof held up by one pillar, a real engineering showpiece in its own right.
Its single best-known piece, the Aztec Sun Stone, has a documented history that predates the museum by nearly two centuries: it was rediscovered on December 17, 1790 during repairs to the Mexico City Cathedral, having lain buried in the Zócalo since shortly after the Spanish conquest. The carved basalt disc measures roughly 3.6 meters across and almost a meter thick, making it one of the largest surviving pieces of Aztec monumental sculpture anywhere.
