Palenque's founding story centres on Benkos Biohó, who led about thirty escaped enslaved people into the forest around 1599 and built a self-governing refuge. The Spanish governor eventually captured him through deception, and he was executed publicly in Cartagena in 1621. His legacy is why Palenque is called the first free African town in the Americas, and UNESCO proclaimed it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005.
The community speaks Palenquero, a creole language that blends Spanish with Portuguese-influenced and African-origin vocabulary and is often described as the only Spanish-based creole in the Americas. Hearing it spoken is itself part of the visit.
This tour treats the village as a living community rather than a museum, which means the history of resistance sits alongside present-day food, music and boxing pride.
