Island in the Sky is the right district to see by air, because its defining feature — being an island — is hard to fully appreciate from the ground. The mesa sits roughly 2,000 feet above the surrounding canyon country, with the Green River running along its western side and the Colorado River along its eastern side, narrowing toward the south where the two rivers actually meet at their real confluence. From a helicopter, that isolation becomes obvious in a way a single roadside overlook can't show: a flat-topped plateau standing on sheer sandstone cliffs, with a visible rim of paler White Rim Sandstone wrapping around it well above the river canyons below.
The same flight also crosses a real, dramatic stretch of geologic time — from the mesa top down to the river gorges, the exposed rock spans roughly 150 million years of layered strata, a cross-section that's far easier to read from the air in one sweep than piecing it together from separate ground viewpoints. Dead Horse Point itself, visible on the route, overlooks a sharp gooseneck bend of the Colorado River some 2,000 feet below the rim.
The route's "Thelma & Louise Point" is a real, specific place, not just a marketing name: the canyon viewpoint (also known locally as Fossil Point) is tied to the famous final scene of the 1991 film Thelma & Louise, and it's visible from the Dead Horse Point area. The helicopter's aerial pass over this stretch of canyon country also takes in several of the natural rock arches the Moab region is known for — formations that, from a ground trail, are usually seen one at a time rather than as part of one continuous canyon-country view.
