Grand View Point sits at the very southern tip of the Island in the Sky mesa, and on a clear day it's one of the few spots in the park where you can actually make out the confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers — the Green arriving from the northwest, the Colorado from the northeast, their combined canyons spreading out below in a maze carved over millions of years. The overlook sits above the White Rim, a distinct pale sandstone bench that runs beneath the entire mesa, its coloring shaped by ancient salt deposited in the soil long before the canyons themselves were cut.
Green River Overlook, by contrast, looks the opposite direction — southwest across the Soda Springs Basin, where the Green River meanders roughly 1,300 feet below an overlook that itself sits around 6,000 feet in elevation. The Green River physically separates Island in the Sky from the Maze district on the far side, and on a clear day you can pick out Maze landmarks like Ekker Butte, Turks Head, Elaterite Butte, and the Orange Cliffs from here — a glimpse into one of the most remote, hardest-to-reach corners of the entire national park.
Buck Canyon Overlook, reached by a short paved, wheelchair-accessible path at about 6,240 feet elevation, looks into the same Buck Canyon that Mesa Arch frames from a different angle — the two stops on this tour show the same drainage from two completely different vantage points, one an open panorama toward the La Sal Mountains, the other a tight natural window 500 feet above the canyon floor.
Covering Grand View Point, Green River Overlook, Buck Canyon Overlook, Mesa Arch, and Upheaval Dome all in a single visit only works because of the day's length: Island in the Sky's own paved scenic drive runs a 34-mile round trip from the visitor center, with Grand View Point alone sitting roughly 12 miles out at the far end of the mesa. A shorter visit forces a choice between the mesa's north and south ends — a full day with lunch built in is really what it takes to see both.
