Kananaskis Country was created in 1977 by Alberta premier Peter Lougheed as a multi-use recreation area of roughly 4,000 square kilometres on the eastern slopes of the Rockies. It is important to know that it is not itself a provincial park but a patchwork of parks and public land, including Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, which was also established in 1977, and Bow Valley Provincial Park, which dates to 1959.
That patchwork is why the back roads here are such good wildlife country. The mix of montane forest, meadows and river valleys is the kind of edge habitat where elk, deer, bears and eagles feed, and a slow drive with a guide who knows the pull-outs often shows more than a long hike would.
The region also carries Olympic history. The Canmore Nordic Centre hosted cross-country skiing at the 1988 Winter Olympics and nearby Nakiska hosted alpine events, which is part of why this corner of the Rockies has such well-built outdoor infrastructure today.
