About This Tour

Mercado 28 is older than most visitors assume — it dates back to the 1980s, and its official name, Artículo 115, has been almost entirely replaced in everyday use by the number of its original city block. It began as a more ordinary market selling produce, seafood, and Yucatecan food alongside crafts, and shifted toward the handicraft-focused market it is today after an economic downturn in the mid-1990s pushed vendors to lean harder into tourist demand.

The real distinction worth understanding is between this market and the Hotel Zone's own retail strip. The Hotel Zone is built around international brand names and resort pricing, while downtown — Mercado 28 included — is where locals actually shop, with prices that run meaningfully lower and a bargaining culture that simply doesn't exist in the beachfront malls.

Crossing between the two sides of the city, over the lagoon that has separated downtown Cancún from its own Hotel Zone since the resort was first built, is as much a part of this tour as the market itself — a real look at a side of Cancún that most all-inclusive stays never show.
