The waters around Isla Mujeres are part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system on earth, which is the real reason the water here runs so clear and supports so much reef life close to shore. These same waters are also home to MUSA, the Museo Subacuático de Arte — one of the most ambitious underwater art projects anywhere, with more than 500 life-size sculptures by artist Jason deCaires Taylor sitting at depths of roughly 4 to 8 meters since 2009, deliberately placed to pull snorkeling and diving traffic away from the natural reef and give it a chance to recover.
