Punta Laguna is a real, community-managed nature reserve near the Coba archaeological zone, and its protection has a specific, documented history: local residents began protecting the area on their own initiative around 1950, and the Mexican federal government formally declared it a natural protected area in 2002. It's managed today by a local Maya cooperative, and an estimated 600 spider and Yucatan black howler monkeys (Alouatta pigra) live in the forest canopy across the reserve -- a real wild population, not a sanctuary enclosure.
That population matters more than it might first seem: spider monkeys are among the most endangered primates in Mesoamerica, threatened both by hunting and by the loss and fragmentation of their forest habitat across the region. A reserve this size, protected by the community that actually lives alongside it rather than a distant government agency, is a genuinely different conservation model from a roadside wildlife stop, and sightings on a guided jungle walk here are real wildlife encounters rather than staged ones -- which also means, as with any wild-animal search, a sighting isn't guaranteed on every visit.
The kayaking and ziplining built into this tour take place across the same jungle and lagoon landscape the monkeys inhabit, which makes this a more physically active, nature-first day than most Cancun-area tours built around ruins or cenotes alone.
