Isla Mujeres carries one of the more interesting name stories in the Mexican Caribbean. Long before the Spanish arrived, the island was a Maya pilgrimage site dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of the moon, fertility, and medicine — between roughly 564 and 1500 AD, Maya travelers are believed to have crossed from the mainland specifically to leave offerings at her sanctuary, including small clay and gold figures representing the goddess herself.
When the Spanish explorer Francisco Hernández de Córdoba landed here in 1517, he found exactly those offerings scattered across the island, and by most accounts that's precisely why he named it Isla Mujeres — "Island of Women." Whether the name was his own invention on the spot or a loose read on what Maya communities already believed about the place, the island's deeper identity as sacred ground to a specific, real deity predates the Spanish name by nearly a thousand years.
None of that history is visible from the water on a 60-foot catamaran, of course, but it's worth knowing that the island this charter spends a full seven hours sailing toward was never just a beach — it was a genuine religious destination long before it became a tourist one.
