About This Tour

A private catamaran charter for your group only, with a real lunch included, sailing from Cancún to Isla Mujeres. This is a private catamaran charter for your group only, with a real lunch included. The route sails from Cancún to the genuine island of Isla Mujeres.

Hacienda Mundaca, inland on Isla Mujeres, tells a very different version of the island's history than its Maya past. Fermín Mundaca, a Spaniard who arrived on the island's shores in 1858 after amassing wealth locals have long tied to piracy and the slave trade, built a sprawling estate here he named Vista Alegre, eventually covering around 40 percent of the entire island with gardens, orchards, and plants gathered from around the world.

The real reason the hacienda is remembered, though, is a love story that went nowhere: Mundaca is said to have fallen for a much younger island woman known as "La Triguena," building ornamental gates in her honor and hoping his wealth would win her over. She married someone else. By most accounts Mundaca died alone, estranged from the island, with an empty tomb still standing in the Isla Mujeres cemetery today.

It's a striking contrast to the island's much older identity as a Maya sanctuary to the goddess Ixchel — centuries of sacred pilgrimage followed, a few hundred years later, by one 19th-century outsider's private obsession. The full-day charter, lunch included, gives enough time on the island to actually reach places like this rather than just pass by the coastline.
