Isla Contoy is a genuinely different kind of island from Isla Mujeres, and its protection status reflects that. The island has been under some form of federal protection since 1961, long before most of the region's coast saw any tourism development at all, and it was formally designated a National Park in 1998 — a status that keeps it almost entirely undeveloped today, with no permanent population and limits on how the island can be used.
That protection is largely about the birds. Estimates for how many species use Isla Contoy as a breeding or resting ground vary depending on the source, ranging from roughly 150 to as many as 170-plus, but frigatebirds, brown pelicans, and double-crested cormorants are among the most commonly documented. Sea turtles nest along its beaches too, and the surrounding waters hold their own share of rays and reef life.
Reaching the island from Punta Sam rather than a Hotel Zone marina is itself part of the distinction — this is a day built around a real nature reserve, not a resort stop dressed up as one.
