Despite its name -- "White Island" in Spanish -- Isla Blanca isn't actually an island most of the time. It's a long, narrow sand-spit peninsula stretching roughly 20 kilometers north of Cancun's Hotel Zone, attached to the mainland by a thin strip of land, with the open Caribbean on one side and the calm, shallow Laguna Chacmuchuch on the other. During strong tropical storms or hurricanes, the sea has occasionally crossed over its narrowest point, briefly turning it into a real island before the sand strip reforms.
The lagoon side is the more ecologically significant half of this landscape: Laguna Chacmuchuch is a flat, shallow saltwater lagoon -- generally only knee to waist deep -- that's home to around 194 recorded species of flora and fauna native to the peninsula, and its strong, consistent winds from November through June are also what makes this stretch popular for wind-powered boating. It's a genuinely different coastal ecosystem from the open Caribbean beaches most visitors see in Cancun itself.
Pairing a bike ride with a boat trip across this terrain is also a distinct physical format on this coastline -- most Cancun-area tours move you by van between a handful of fixed stops, while this one lets you cover the spit's own geography under your own power before switching to water for the lagoon crossing, taking in real coastal birdlife and marine life along the way.
