The Volkswagen Beetle's Mexican story is its own piece of 20th-century history, and it's genuinely tied to this specific route. Volkswagen started building Beetles at its Puebla plant in 1967, and the car — known locally as the "Vocho" — became so embedded in everyday Mexican life that the company had produced its one-millionth Mexican-built unit by 1980. As demand fell elsewhere through the late 1970s and '80s, Volkswagen consolidated Beetle production down to just Brazil and then, from 1996 onward, to Puebla alone — meaning for years, every new Beetle built anywhere in the world came from Mexico. The very last one rolled off that same Puebla line on July 30, 2003, sent off by its own workforce with mariachi music and flowers.
