Genuine tequila legally has to come from blue agave grown around Jalisco, over 1,000 km away — the Yucatán's own native spirit is xtabentún, a honey-and-anise liqueur with real Maya origins, which is what a regional agave-spirit tasting stop here is most likely built around.

It's worth being upfront about the geography here: actual tequila, by law, has to be made from blue agave grown in and around Jalisco, more than 1,000 kilometers from the Yucatán Peninsula — it isn't a regional Yucatán product. What the peninsula does have is its own genuine spirit, xtabentún, a honey-and-anise liqueur rooted in a real pre-Hispanic Maya tradition of fermenting honey from stingless Melipona bees with bark from the balché tree for use in ceremonies. Spanish colonists reworked the recipe around 1550, replacing the balché bark with anise while keeping the honey base, and that's roughly the version still produced across the Yucatán today. A tasting stop on a trip like this is, realistically, most likely built around xtabentún or another regional agave-adjacent spirit rather than genuine Jalisco tequila — which is exactly why the honest version of this tour describes it as an "agave-spirit tasting," not a tequila one.
Either way, it's a genuinely different addition to a Chichén Itzá day than most tours offer, giving the trip a tasting element most itineraries skip entirely.
The cenote swim and Valladolid stop that round out the day are the same real version found across several of these itineraries — Chichén Itzá first, then water, then a colonial town built from the stones of the Maya settlement it replaced.
