Its original pyramid dedicated to the Maya deity Itzamná was torn down in the 16th century so its stones could build the Franciscan convent now standing on the same spot — but the town still has nearly 80 other pre-Hispanic structures, including the Kinich Kak Moo pyramid, the third-largest by volume in all of Mexico.

Izamal earned its nickname honestly. Every building in the historic center really is painted the same ochre yellow, a tradition most commonly traced to preparations for Pope John Paul II's 1993 visit — but the town's real history goes back much further. Maya tradition held Izamal as the cult center of Itzamná, a supreme deity credited with bringing civilization, and the site once held a pyramid built over his legendary burial place. When Franciscan friar Diego de Landa arrived in the 16th century, he had that pyramid torn down and used its stones to build the Convent of San Antonio de Padua directly on top of it between 1549 and 1562 — its atrium is reportedly the second-largest in the world after St. Peter's in Vatican City.
Izamal also still holds nearly 80 pre-Hispanic structures, including the Kinich Kak Moo pyramid — by volume, the third-largest pyramid anywhere in Mexico, though far less visited than Chichén Itzá's.
The ATV leg adds a genuinely hands-on, off-road element to a day that would otherwise be entirely a drive-and-walk itinerary, before or after the main event at Chichén Itzá itself.
