An archaeologist-led visit is the kind of tour where recent, ongoing research actually becomes part of the conversation, and Chichén Itzá has no shortage of it. Ground-penetrating radar and LiDAR surveys have shown El Castillo isn't one pyramid but several, nested inside each other — an earlier, smaller pyramid was first found inside it in 1931, and a third, even older structure, roughly 10 meters tall and possibly dating to as early as 550-800 AD, was identified beneath that in 2016. Separately, the Gran Acuífero Maya project has spent years since 2017 using sonar and radar to map the underwater cave systems beneath the site, and geophysical surveys have detected what researchers believe is a cenote sitting directly beneath El Castillo itself, with radar work ongoing to try to locate an actual entrance to it.
None of that is visible to a visitor walking through on a standard group tour, which is exactly the gap a specialist archaeologist guide is positioned to fill — connecting what you're looking at to findings that, in some cases, are barely a few years old.
