Isla Mujeres -- Spanish for "Island of Women" -- gets its name from a documented piece of history rather than a single simple legend. The island was part of the Maya province of Ekab more than 1,500 years ago and served as a sanctuary for Ixchel, the Maya goddess of the moon, fertility, medicine, and happiness. When a Spanish expedition led by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba landed here in 1517, they found numerous stone and clay figurines depicting women, left as offerings to Ixchel, and that discovery is what gave the island its Spanish name.
A second, later legend also attaches to the island: that 17th- and 18th-century pirates -- the coast was a real haven for buccaneers including figures like Henry Morgan and Jean Lafitte -- kept their mistresses here, away from their ships. The timeline makes clear this is a layered story rather than a single origin: the island was already carrying its name from the Ixchel figurines found in 1517, roughly a century or more before the pirate era this second legend describes.
A private catamaran charter reserved exclusively for your own group -- rather than a large shared party boat -- is a meaningfully different way to make the crossing from Cancun to an island with that kind of layered, centuries-old history behind it, with the smaller group size allowing a more personal pace for stops and swimming along the way.
