Roldanillo isn't a casual paragliding stop — it's one of the sport's genuine world-class sites. The Paragliding World Cup first came here in 2011, drawing pilots from 28 countries, and the town has since hosted World Cup Superfinals in 2013, 2018, and 2024, plus the 14th FAI World Paragliding Championship in January 2015. What makes it work is the terrain: the main launch site, Agua Panela, sits 869 meters above the town itself (which is already at 925 meters elevation), and pilots regularly find thermals climbing at 5 to 6 meters per second with cloud bases above 3,000 meters — textbook conditions that have made Roldanillo one of the most reliable competition venues anywhere in the world, not just in Colombia.
The wine tasting afterward isn't an afterthought either, even though Colombia's wine industry still surprises most visitors. Valle del Cauca and the department of Huila together account for roughly 97% of Colombia's grape production, with Valle del Cauca alone responsible for around 70% of the national harvest. The nearby town of La Unión, just down the valley from Roldanillo, has earned the informal title of Colombia's 'Wine Capital' — home to Casa Grajales, the country's largest wine producer, which works with hybrid grape varieties like Isabella and Italia bred to tolerate the region's heat and humidity, often blended with concentrated musts from Chile and Argentina to round out the final wine.
Hacienda El Paraíso provides the day's change of pace in both tempo and tone. Built between 1816 and 1828 and later owned by the family of novelist Jorge Isaacs, it's the real setting for his 1867 novel María, one of the central works of Latin American Romanticism. The dry forest surrounding the hacienda and the broader Roldanillo flying area is itself a genuinely distinct ecosystem for this part of Colombia — a seasonally dry tropical forest rather than the cloud forest or wet jungle most visitors associate with the country, and it's a large part of what gives this particular corner of the Cauca Valley its reliable thermal activity for paragliding in the first place.
