The route on this ride climbs well past Cristo Rey itself and into the Andes foothills toward Yanaconas, a mountain area most locals know by the name of its real landmark: the Virgin of the Andes, a Marian monument and viewpoint built by the Marist Brothers. From the edge of Cali, the road runs roughly 8.5 kilometers toward the mountains before a further climb of about 13 kilometers up through the Andes to reach the Yanaconas viewpoint itself — a genuine mountain ascent on winding roads, which is exactly the kind of terrain a cruiser motorcycle is built to handle at a relaxed pace rather than rushed through in a van.
Cristo Rey, passed near the start of the route, sits on the Cerro de los Cristales at 26 meters tall including its pedestal — inaugurated in 1953 to mark 50 years since the end of Colombia's War of a Thousand Days, and funded by public donations rather than any single benefactor. Seeing it from the road on a motorcycle, rather than parked at its base with a crowd of other visitors, is a genuinely different experience of the same monument most Cali tours treat as a quick photo stop.
Colombia has a long, well-documented motorcycle culture of its own — motorcycles are the most common form of private transport in the country, and routes like this one through the hills above Cali are popular with local riders on weekends, not just a product built for tourists. Whether you're riding yourself with a valid license or sitting behind an experienced local driver, the appeal of doing Cristo Rey and Yanaconas this way is the same: open air, real mountain curves, and a pace you set rather than one dictated by a tour bus schedule.
