Colombia has more recorded bird species than any other country on Earth — commonly cited at somewhere around 1,870 to 1,900-plus species, with at least 62 of them found nowhere else. A disproportionate share of that diversity sits right in Valle del Cauca: more than half of Colombia's total species list has been recorded in the department, much of it tied to the Chocó bioregion that runs along the Pacific side of the Andes.
Cali itself is, by most counts, the single most bird-rich city in Colombia, with somewhere around 560 species documented within the municipality's own limits — more than a quarter of every bird species recorded anywhere in the country, and roughly 5 percent of every bird species known to science, all inside one city's boundaries. The Cali River corridor that this tour follows is one of the main reasons why: an urban green corridor running right through the city that still functions as real habitat and a migration route for dozens of resident and passing species.
The wider region backs this up with its own dedicated reserves — places like the Yotoco Forest Reserve, which hosts more than 350 species across just 559 hectares, and the Laguna de Sonso wetland along the Cauca River, with roughly 390 species recorded — all within easy reach of a city whose urban river alone can turn up dozens of species in a single short outing.
