About This Tour

This tour is completely private — after learning how to turn raw cacao into chocolate by hand, you'll hike along an indigenous jungle trail where cars and motorcycles aren't allowed, ending at a private waterfall for a swim in the jungle.

Cacao is native to the Americas, and in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta it is grown by smallholders, including Arhuaco communities whose cacao is sold as a regional origin. Turning a raw pod into chocolate by hand makes clear how much labor sits behind a bar: harvesting, fermenting, drying, roasting, grinding and tempering.

The tour's trail is closed to cars and motorcycles and passes through an Indigenous-linked area of the foothills, so the walk is quiet and slow. The Sierra Nevada is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (designated 1979), home to the Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kankuamo peoples, and respectful conduct on the trail matters.

A swim at the end is easy to enjoy but depends on recent rain: waterfalls here swell in the wetter months and shrink in the dry season.
