About This Tour
A private day trip to Estancia El Ombú de Areco for a full traditional lunch — empanadas, asado, and dessert with alcoholic beverages — plus a gaucho demonstration and a choice of horseback riding or a carriage ride. This trip is built around one specific, real estancia — El Ombú de Areco — rather than a generic ranch stop, with a private transfer door-to-door and a full traditional meal included.
Estancia El Ombú de Areco isn't a generic ranch built for tourism — its main house dates to 1880, built by Pablo Ricchieri, an Argentine army officer of Italian descent who later rose to become the country's Minister of War. The house reflects his Italian heritage in its architecture, while a covered gallery with richly tiled floors and cascading steps down into the gardens follows the late-colonial style common to pampas estancias of the period.
The property passed out of the Ricchieri family in 1934, when it was bought by Enrique Boelcke, and it has stayed in Boelcke hands ever since. It was his granddaughter, Eva Boelcke, who opened the estancia's gates to visitors in 1993 — turning what had been a private working ranch into one of the handful of historic estancias near Buenos Aires that genuinely still run as working properties rather than purpose-built event venues.
The town nearby, San Antonio de Areco, was founded in 1730 around a chapel and has since become, by provincial law, Argentina's official seat of gaucho tradition — it's home to the country's oldest and best-known gaucho festival, Día de la Tradición, first held in 1939 and timed every November 10th to the birthday of José Hernández, author of the national epic poem Martín Fierro. The gaucho demonstration you'll see on this tour draws on that same living regional culture, not a staged re-enactment built purely for visitors.
